In every community, there are people with unique abilities, talents, and perspectives that volunteer in their community. However, for people with disabilities, participation in volunteer work can sometimes be overlooked or challenging. Fostering an inclusive environment where people with disabilities are supported in their volunteer efforts is not just an act of kindness; it's a fundamental step towards building a more inclusive society.
Just recently, Unique Care partnered with Dollar Tree (located at 864 Remsen Avenue in Brooklyn), to provide volunteer experience for our Brooklyn Day-Hab participants, some of which have been diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and other developmental disabilities.
Our dedicated Direct Support Professional staff captured memorable moments of them restocking Dollar Tree's shelves with items they would normally purchase as customers. This offered our individuals a new perspective they would otherwise not experience if not allowed to volunteer their time.
By engaging in volunteer activities such as this, individuals with disabilities can break down barriers and stereotypes, showcasing their skills and talents to the broader community. By volunteering, they serve as role models- inspiring others to embrace inclusivity within our local community and championing the fight for the rights of people who have disabilities.
